[OFF]hrs was an experimental pop-up project space, mostly conducted in Honolulu, in 2012-2013.  Currently, [OFF]hrs in hiatus.  We will send out word if we resume our activities under this guise or a different one.  It was formed in the spirit of alternative art schools, cultures, and forums world-wide:, including these foundational ones: Joseph Beuys' Free International University, Robert Filliou's Smiling Cedilla, Gordon Matta-Clark's Food, Fluxus' Art-Amusement.  A non-technical  research center of "applied culture,"  we advocated creative common activities that sharpened material and artistic skills, as well as expansive thinking for a modern world.   We were  a "pop-up" creative time entity, happening wherever and whenever the opportunity arises - mostly in Honolulu, HI.

MISSION:
"[OFF]hrs creative is committed to collecting, synthesizing, assessing, and theorizing new metrics for the strange [off] time that exists between the pure productivity of work and the pure couch potato syndrome of leisure. We are interested in understanding, supporting, and enacting creative common spaces and moments of play that happen in between work, education, and entertainment culture.

We work across conceptions of work/play; labor/leisure.  How to connect with one another beyond our productive credentials and/or spending money on food and drink? How to initiate and grow conversations?   Can there be a way for both work and leisure infrastructures to place more value on common cultural spaces and activities that enrich cultural well-being and diversity?   We seek to understand and promote creative practices that are core to human values and ethical relationships, that challenge ourselves and are generous to others, that are not "productive" in the traditional sense, nor already packaged and sold as entertainment.

Our activities include playing games, thinking, writing, drinking, talking, hosting events, leading discussions and critiques, community culture projects and more...We ask all of our collaborators  to focus on the vagueries of [OFF] hours, to highlight radical insights for further discussion in a non-pretentious way, to create playful tools and rules that everyone involved can use to explore on their own, to demonstrate possible scenarios, solutions, and to construct potential diagrams for new possibilities in our world.  We aspire to be free-thinking, slightly [OFF], but totally ON minds. We believe that the realm of art, as such an  [OFF] activity, is crucial to the cultivation of cultural commons. "
